Lateral Entry Teacher Requirements

Welcome to Guilford County Schools! We are glad to have you join our family.   Once you have been hired, you will participate in three different pre-employment events.



New Employee Orientation

All new Guilford County Schools employees attend New Employee Orientation regardless of position or licensure status.  Your attendance at this orientation is initiated with a phone call from our Human Resources Staffing Department after your employee file is completely processed.  Sessions are offered continuously throughout the year.  You will be scheduled for the next available session.

At this session, you will receive:
-  Your letter of employment verifying your salary
-  Your contract
-  Your benefits package
-  Assistance applying for licensure if applicable
-  A review of district policies
-  Answers related to questions about employment

Lateral Entry Orientation

All new lateral entry teachers are required by the state to complete a 10-day Lateral Entry Orientation prior to entering a classroom.  Once the Office of Employment notifies the Lateral Entry Resource and Advising Center of your employment, you will receive an e-mail notification and a phone call regarding registration for the required orientation.

At this session, you will receive:

  • 60 hours of teacher “boot camp” at the Lateral Entry Resource and Advising Center designed to prepare you to enter the classroom ready for success
  • 20 hours of structured independent activities and assignments to complete while working out of the Lateral Entry Resource and Advising Center

Right Start Orientation

All new teachers with 6 or fewer months of experience are required to attend Right Start Orientation.  Your attendance at this orientation is initiated through online registration. 

If you do not already have a Professional Development account, click here to obtain one:  Confirmation may take up to one week.

-  An overview of district personnel policies
-  An overview of your curriculum content with a specialist
-  An overview of classroom management procedures
-  An orientation to your school
