Recognitions

GCS Employee of the Month for June 2011
The board recognized Mary Kay Grubb, life skills teacher at Bessemer Elementary, as the June 2011 Employee of the Month. Often arriving early and working late and on weekends, Grubb takes time to be creative and find new ways to enrich her students’ classroom experience, caring for them as if they were her children.

GCS Volunteer of the Month for June 2011
The board recognized Thurman Haynes, a volunteer at Haynes-Inman Education Center, as the June 2011 Volunteer of the Month. The special education center is named in part for his late granddaughter, Meredith Leigh Haynes. He volunteers at least 20 hours a week, assisting with physical education classes, bus duty, escorting students in the hallway, and cleaning and rearranging the multipurpose room.

Spring Sports State Champions and Coaches Awards and Honors
The board recognized the spring sports state champions and coaches who received honors. Leigh Hebbard, district athletic director, received the NCHSAA Dave Harris Athletic Director of the Year award. The Northwest High men’s lacrosse team earned a state championship. Students from High Point Central, Northwest, Andrews and Southwest earned individual state championship titles in track. Also, the Northern men’s indoor track team was the team with the highest grade point average among men’s indoor track teams from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

2010-11 Outgoing/Incoming Officers of Guilford County Association of Educators
The board recognized the outgoing and newly elected board of Guilford County Association of Educators (GCAE). The outgoing board includes Tijuana Hayes, who has served as president since the 2009-10 school year; Elizabeth Foster, vice president; Elizabeth Brown, elementary director; Turkesshia Moore, elementary director; Pamela Bunch, middle school director; Saletta Urena, high school director; Gail Holmes, student services director; Yvonne Woodward, administrative director; and Amy Harrison, secretary.

Staff Reports

2011-12 Insurance Coverage

The board approved the following lines of insurance coverage for fiscal year 2011-12: general liability, garage liability, law enforcement, errors and omissions, auto and garage keeper, high school catastrophic, middle school catastrophic, student athletic, student accident, excess worker’s comp and employer’s liability, and property insurance.

Contractual Agreement with Stroupe Inc. for Alderman Elementary Roof Replacement/Repair   
The board approved a contract with Stroupe Inc. for roof replacement/repairs for Alderman Elementary in the amount of $344,985.

Contractual Agreement with Lomax Construction for Grimsley High School Track and Athletic Improvements at Jamison Stadium
The board approved a contract with Lomax Builders for the Grimsley High track and improvements to Jamison Stadium in the amount of $1,237,365.

Contractual Agreement with Kearey Builders for Simeon Stadium Athletic Improvements
The board approved a contract with Kearey Builders for the Simeon Stadium athletic improvements in the amount of $1,211,100. The improvements include upgrading the stadium lighting to 75 foot-candles.

Continued 2011-12 Budget Discussion
Sharon Ozment, chief financial officer, led the board in a continued discussion regarding the 2011-12 budget. Staff will provide more information about the impact of the state budget and prepare for the board to take final action or pass an interim budget resolution at its next meeting.

Nomination of the GTCC Board of Trustees

The board voted to table the nomination for the Guilford Technical Community College Board of Trustees.
