Habitat for Humanity House

Guilford County Schools (GCS) partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro to sponsor the building of a house in our community. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro was formed in 1987 and is the 16th largest out of 1700 affiliates.  Habitat utilizes volunteer labor to reduce building costs and foster unity in the community.  Homeowners contribute 300 hours of sweat equity and purchase their homes from Habitat for Humanity. HFH makes no-profit and the families benefit from interest-free financing.  In the past 20 years, Habitat has built over 300 affordable houses in Greensboro.

Funding for this house was made possible by a local organization with no financial costs to Guilford County Schools.GCS provided labor by staff and students from throughout the county. Each region organized teams to work on Saturdays. Administrative personnel, district office employees and Board of Education Members took their turns as volunteers. In total over 2000 hours were donated by 289 GCS volunteers.

The building began on February 20, 2010 and the completed house was dedicated on July 31, 2010. In addition to work on the construction site, special projects included work completed at schools as well as creative gifts offered by younger students. A picnic table was built by the Northern Guilford High School Habitat for Humanity Club. Art work for the family was made by students and the art teacher at Reedy Fork Elementary School, and a flower bed was planted by Cone Elementary School.
