SCALE

School/Community Alternative Learning Environments (SCALE) is Guilford County's means of providing students who have been suspended an opportunity to continue their education. SCALE uses a variety of approaches for improving behavior and academics with the ultimate goal of enabling the student to return to a regular school setting.

The SCALE program operates off school campuses at community sites located throughout the County. Currently, there are seven locations which serve approximately 20 students each. Staffing for the program includes regular classroom teachers, special education teachers, teacher assistants, social workers, counselors and a school resource officer who serves all the sites.

Recognizing that students who are long-term suspended from school will not behave substantially different in a new environment without appropriate interventions to affect change, SCALE includes an orientation process to help students transfer the skills they learn to the regular school program. In addition, SCALE provides significant support for students when they make the transition back to their regular school. That support includes assignment of an advisor who helps them integrate into the new setting and monitors their attendance.
